The Story Behind the Stories

Gail Rice is a Canadian-born writer and psychologist based in Sydney,
who has lived in Australia for over forty years — an accidental Australian. Her essays explore the
emotional stories we inherit, the fear of becoming invisible, and the courage it takes to speak the
unsaid.

For decades she listened to other people’s stories. Then she realised it was time to tell
her own. What began as a private essay about ageing and desire unexpectedly ignited

conversations around the world — proving that when we dare to speak, we are seen more clearly
than ever.

“Restorying isn’t about becoming someone new — it’s about
discovering who we are, and allowing others to see us.”

She brings humour, vulnerability and psychological depth to conversations about
reinvention, late-life desire, and the freedom of change. She is currently writing
her memoir, reclaiming and restorying her own life.

Her essay “For My 70th Birthday I Hired an Escort” was cited in a New York Times Styles
feature as Oldster Magazine’s most-read essay among readers — and has been featured across
six countries.
