Gail Rice – Writer. Wanderer. Psychologist.
Book Gail / Interview Enquiries
Gail Rice is a Canadian-born writer and psychologist based in Sydney,
who has lived in Australia for over forty years — an accidental Australian. Her essays explore the
emotional stories we inherit, the fear of becoming invisible, and the courage it takes to speak the
unsaid.
For decades she listened to other people’s stories. Then she realised it was time to tell
her own. What began as a private essay about ageing and desire unexpectedly ignited
conversations around the world — proving that when we dare to speak, we are seen more clearly
than ever.
She brings humour, vulnerability and psychological depth to conversations about
reinvention, late-life desire, and the freedom of change. She is currently writing
her memoir, reclaiming and restorying her own life.

Her essay “For My 70th Birthday I Hired an Escort” was cited in a New York Times Styles
feature as Oldster Magazine’s most-read essay among readers — and has been featured across
six countries.

Gail speaks about the stories that shape who
we become — messy, beautiful and ever-changing — and how we can restory them at any age.
She brings curiosity, honesty and warmth, inviting audiences to think, laugh and see their own
stories differently.

What it takes to change course in later life — and why it’s never too late.
Reclaiming the body, desire and presence in a culture that tells older women to
disappear.
How we inherit emotional stories that silence us — and how we find our way back to
speech.
The psychology of how shame lives in stories, and how compassion rewrites them.
